According to a history written about the Whitin machine works, the Lasells of Whitinsville were “warm-hearted, sensitive, artistic people, socially gracious and fond of good living.” Although the first two of these characteristics were not ideal qualifications for running a machinery business in central Massachusetts, that is what they did, until textile work went south in the middle of the last century.
