As a special treat, the author of The Guest Book, Sarah Blake, joined the Page Terners’ discussion this past Wednesday, September 2. Sarah began the session with a terrifically articulated, in-depth explanation of how the book evolved from small bits of ideas she found interesting into a multi-layered generational story. Drawing on her personal experience as a member of a family with its own Maine island, she used the Miltons’ island as a metaphor for the way a family holds itself apart from others with unspoken secrets, creating a fragmented history for the following generations.

Initially we thought using Zoom for book club discussions would serve simply as a substitute for meeting in person. We discovered that it actually works well for bringing Club members together who might not cross paths under normal circumstances. Now we know to seek these new friends out at the Club next summer!

Due to the enthusiasm generated, we are planning book discussions a few times this winter. New participants are welcome, and we are gathering suggestions for future reading. We can do this as random readings or choose a theme.

Let us know your thoughts via email to Martie Janeway (martiejaneway@gmail.com).
